GETBA Container Lock option, vehicle breakin warning

I have received emails from members advising of recent instances of vehicle and container break ins.

We have endeavoured to source a lock that should be effective in reducing container break ins and have a picture and information about it on our website.  It is called an  Abus Diskus Padlock.  The close shackle design leaves little room for bolt cutters, crowbars and saws.  Click here to read more.  If you are prompted for a password it is CRS123.

Please remind your staff to hide their GPS and radar detectors before parking their vehicles.  Check also that no tell tale sucker marks  are left on windows to let criminals know there may be one hiding in the vehicle.

GETBA Suspicious Characters Notification

This morning I was in a meeting at Columbus, recently taken over from Pickles, with the Contract Manager of Chubb, Adam Munday and during this meeting I recieved a call from a GETBA member in BishopsGate to say there was a carload of quite dodgy characters acting suspiciously.  Adam and I came straight over to check them out and Adam was able to phone the police on the spot and find out whether they were a vehicle of interest.  In this case they were not and infact turned out to be students at the school which is sharing the Remax office.

If you are unsure about the calibre of some characters hanging about then I am sure Ulu at ATC Train me will be more than happy for you to give him a call on 576 5111 with a description to see whether they are his students.  If not, then please advise the police on 111.  I am always happy to be advised of any details.

GETBA reminder to keep an eye out for opportunists!

I have received a couple of emails from members for circulation:

One member in the Allens Road area .
............."I caught a person breaking into my car right outside my factory door at 6.00pm.  He had been lurking around for a while.
White Caldina station wagon Reg: CSS 461. ................ He was seen with two other suspicious vehicles earlier but no registration numbers on those two vehicles as they sped off before anyone could get close enough"

Another on Ron Driver Ave earlier in the week "was robbed of approx $500 on Sat between 10am to 2pm.   Camera footage revealed a pale gold/ light silver/champagne nissan sunny or similar on his driveway with three occupants.
One person who tried the gate and appears to have got in was wearing black long sleeve top and black shorts and socks and dark shoes."

Please let the police know if you see anything at all suspicious and please forward any details of these characters and their vehicles to me to warn others.

Reminder to keep alert for handbag snatchers

I received this from a member over the weekend which serves as a reminder to all that bag snatching continues in our area.

"Coming out of work at 4pm my brother and I noticed a 4wd with 3 occupants drive past us. They were staring at us quite intently which raised out suspicions. They turned around at the back of Lighting Plus and drove back past us still staring and went up by FruitWorld. We recorded the number plate and went to go home. As we were about to pull out into Ti Rakau Drive they again drove past us still staring.
I decided they looked too suspicious to dismiss so ducked around the block and pulled back into the carpark. We found them parked near FruitWorld so we parked close to them.
They were still watching us so my brother left to go to Shell to divert attention from us.
The two passengers in the 4wd were swapping seats and were trying to decide where to sit, which again seemed strange.
They then pulled out in front of me and one the of occupants got out of the car and pretended to inspect one the tyres, as if to check if it had a puncture.
They then drove through the vacant carpark next to me and I watched them in my rear view mirror.
There was an asian woman walking with her back to them and one of the people in the car leant out of the window, while it was still moving and tried to grab her bag.
I then rang the police and started to give chase. I was delayed getting out of the park by a car but followed them up the back of Lighting Plus. This connects onto Torrens Road.
By the time i reached the road I thought I could see them at the end of the road where it connects to Burswood Ave.
I chased them down there, thought they turned left into Burswood, heading towards Ti Rakau.
When I reached the end of Torrens I couldn’t see them anymore. The lights were red going onto Ti Rakau so I dont think they could have managed to get onto Ti Rakau. My guess is that they ducked into the old Bunnings carpark.
I was still talking to the police at this time, and went back to find the asian woman. She was in the Souvenier shop and I waited there with her for the police to arrive.
I ended up going back to Howick Police Station to give my statement.

The vehicle was:
A 4wd, similar in size and shape to a Toyota Prado (though it may not have been that model)
It was dark metallic green on top, with silver/grey trim around the bottom.
The number plate was YU2927 (the police on the phone said it was stolen)

There were 3 people in the car.
They were all Maori/Pacific Islanders. One was quite fat. The driver was skinny and had a goatee/moustache. The third passenger was of a medium build. They would have all been in their mid 20s."

Please keep an eye out in carparks and remind all your staff to carry the minimum amount of cash and to keep handbags as secure as possible at all times when shopping.

Thanks to the actions of this GETBA member the police have a good lead to go on.   Police report they have got a sizeable bunch (approx 30) of the killer beez gang in custody and have had some other ’good catches’ recently.

GETBA Crime Update & Eastern Courier Breakfast Reminder

I recieved this report earlier in the week from a member in the Allens Road Area:
Just to let you know that we have had a young polynesian/moari male individual of tall, slim build with a distinct fine scar on the left hand side of his face come into reception here at our office on Allens Road, East Tamaki/Highbrook area looking for a "Barrister" at about 4:30pm today.   He also went next door to the recruitment agency looking for a "job".  He also wandered into the stationery shop having a good look around.  One of my male colleagues who was leaving the office at the time, did approach him in the car park quizzing him on who he was looking for, as he could see him trying to peer into the keyhole of the office opposite to ours.  He and his stockier polynesian/maori male friend were driving a silver Holden (Commodore?) with a spoiler, but unfortunately we didn’t get the car rego number. They left quite speedily.  Quite suspicious behaviour.  If you could please let the other members know to be aware of these two young men, that would be much appreciated."

Another report just recieved from an Andromeda Crescent member:
"Just to let you know we have had a white transit van reg no: ZA7589 going up and down the driveways checking out the buildings - 2 male maori occupants. About 1pm today. If you can pass this on thanks"

GETBA warning to keep all cars locked

From the Cryers Road, Highbrook area, two recent notifications received :
"We just had a car broken into on site.  A staff member interrupted the would be thieves as they were damaging the steering column probably to try to start it.  There were two occupants in a Silver Honda Integra DBE281 that sped off after the discovery."

"A staff member had their car broken into and their radar detector was stolen."
The police say that if there is a mark left on either the window or the dash from the detector, thieves know they are likely to be lucky.  They recommend the area is wiped as you remove the detector.

Please warn your staff to keep a special eye out for the occupanats of this vehicle, to ensure their vehicles are locked at all times. and to greet all unknown people encountered on site, letting them know they have been noticed.

GETBA - Mauve Skyline and handbag alert

Have just recieved two messages from members:

  • In the Trugood Drive area a Mauve Nissan Skyline, Rego EAB825 has been cruising around with 3-4 polynesian males inside.
Our member instinctively felt that they appeared to be taking an inordinate amount of interest in the inside of his and neighbouring businesses.  Please instruct your staff know to keep an eye out for this vehicle and its occupants and advise me if this vehicle is noted acting suspiciously in your area.

  • It would appear that handbag thieves are very active in our area at the moment with particular emphasis on females at shopping centres just getting into their vehicles.   Please advise your staff to lock their doors before they put their handbags down inside their car.  Our member witnessed this happening as he was getting his groceries on Monday night and the police informed him that they had been active at another neighbouring block of shops shortly before.

One of the keys to success in stemming crime is that witnesses give accurate descriptions of both the vehicle being driven and the occupants of the vehicle.   We have a suspicious behaviour fax form on the front page of our website and attached to this email, to remind staff the most useful information police are looking for when interviewing witnesses.  Please print out a copy to keep in your OSH folder for easy access when the need to report any crime or suspicious activiy arises and encourage your staff to use it.

GETBA - White MPV acting suspiciously

This was received from a member in the Lady Ruby Drive area last night and although at this stage is not a ’vehicle of interest’ to the police, its movements have been noted.

We have had a white MPV van ’99-’02 model Rego plate EAD 443 driving into our carpark and down the length of the building very slowly appearing to be on business but then drive away when they realised they were being watched. It was clear they were "checking out" the premises.
There were three occupants - the driver, Pacific Islander or Maori, wearing dark glasses with afro style hair, and two similiar occupants in the back.

GETBA - warning driver of a WHITE UTE

I received this message this morning from a GETBA member in Ti Rakau Drive.

"I thought I should let you know to look out for a white 2WD single cab ute ( hilux type) Number plate UK 7619 (these are stolen plates but are on the vehicle) with a 6ft white male with a 3 weeks growth shaved head.

He had come into our showroom and climbed into a $700,000 new boat and stole the Flat screen TV from under our noses. We were too slow to catch him as he took off.
Any reports or sightings would be appreciated."
Please let either me or the police know if you happen to notice this person around.  Thanks

Suspicious Behaviour Alert

During this week we have had a couple of reports from our businesses mainly in the Greenmount / Ti Rakau Drives area:

Firstly we were alerted to the behaviour of an occupant of a pinky Holden Barina (PW 8047) which was parked beside their workplace. He was rather suspicious looking with messy dreadlocks  They weren’t happy with his appearance and asked us to check him out with the police.   The police say it’s good idea to keep an eye out for him and report any further sightings of dodgy behaviour.

A day later another member reported the occupants of a car in their’s and neighbouring car parks who  were looking at the cars and texting, then drove off before they got out to them.  The car was an old model Red Mitsubishi Sigma, Reg LC 2800, 2 Island/Maori guys early 20’s late teens.

Please encourage your staff to email me as many details as possible when noticing suspicious behaviour.   I was told by a member this week that a trend for criminals is to wear striking things like bright clothing, false beards etc that are easy to remove but tend to take the focus of the rest of their appearance.

We do have a suspicious behaviour fax form on our website, please take a  moment to download it and keep a few copies in your reception for easy access.

Earlier this afternoon one of our retail members was threatened by a middle eastern looking male with a dark red turban and a fake looking beard.

He left driving a white cefiro or maxima type of car with dark tinted windows and some signwriting on the rear.  No registration is known at this point.

If anyone sees any one with that description acting suspiciously, please dial 111.

I have checked this with the police and the occupants of this vehicle are currently being sought by Police.

Their reply included this message:
"If it is seen by any of your members, please instruct them to dial ’111’ and get them to advise the communicator that they were instructed to do so by the Howick Police. We need to know who is in the vehicle."

Please forward this email to any  of your business colleagues through out Auckland .

Otara Police Update From Community Constable Seluone Seluone

"In the general residential area bedrooms are still the main target room. With daylight savings here and summer on its way, it gives us more of a reason to air the house when we come back from work (that’s if you work during the day) HOWEVER we would suggest you the air only the rooms that your family are in at the time.

Offenders are not afraid to enter houses while occupants are home, in particular the lounge and kitchen areas. One burglary recently of a bedroom occurred when the occupants had 60 people there for a birthday party. Upon entering offenders then blocked the bedroom to the rest of the house by using a dressing table and then helped themselves to the birthday presents! Surprisingly no one saw them and only discovered the plot later.

Items targeted are our small items i.e. jewellery, camera’s, play stations, laptops etc.

The majority of burglaries are occurring Monday - Friday, between 1000hrs and 1500hrs.

Within the commercial area, late model Fords and Holden’s are being used to commit crimes.   Offences have occurred across the wider Auckland area where generally  two to three offenders are seen on cameras and witnesses are targeting larger stores.

Closer to home a Ti Rakau Drive boat yard had a boat stolen.

They use scanners and prefer jemmy bars and a sledge hammer. They target the rear fire exit door to gain entry.

Offenders targeting the above stores have been seen using:

•    CEN368 Make/Model: Holden Commodore Berina V6 Saloon Colour: Silver  Year: 2004

•    CCM455 Make/Model: Holden Manaro V2 Saloon Colour: Yellow   Year: 2004

Camera footage at one store shows three offenders helping themselves to 11 Bravia plasma TV’s. But they dont  limit their selves to electrical appliances but have also taken beauty products.

If you see these vehicles out and about, call 111. Remember to take note of the driver, passengers, descriptions i.e. clothing, direction of travel... it all helps."

GETBA alert for Blue Mercedes

email just recieved from a member in Lorien Place....

"One of our employees reported that this vehicle (details following ) was parked down our driveway with 4 Maori or Island guys drinking. When challenged they didn’t seem too fazed, but when they saw a phone being used they took off.

REG ZS 4629 Blue Mercedes with chrome mag wheels"

I checked this with police intel and they say the vehicle is one that should be reported if seen in the area.  Therefore I recommend you phone Karl McCabe at Howick Police Intelligence Section on 09 538 0300  as soon as possible.

GETBA - police warning - early morning burglaries

Chubb advised me today that they were told of occupants in a vehicle acting very suspiciously ......

"spotted driving slowly around Meadowlands shopping center last night around 2150hrs.

Two males with hoodies driving a Burgundy Holden Commodore Rego: LR6416.  They also were seen scoping out an adjacent Caltex service station for around 5 mins"

The police advise that break ins are being experienced at around 6am in the mornings recently by high end product carriers, such as electronics (TVs) perfumes etc.

They have noted that  pedestrian fire exits are particularly targeted and the criminals are using gas cutters on exterior bars. They are also using sledge hammers and crowbars.

They have also noted that trembler alarms have been comparatively effective.

Police would like you to notify them if you spot a late model Blue Ford 2005 XR8 rego DAM984  with 2-3 males in black clothing.

Please disburse this email as widely as possible to alert all retailers and wholesalers of this very recent trend as our area is not the only one currently being hit.

GETBA Valuables in vehicles warning

Have just had a call from a member in Lady Ruby Drive who has had his car’s radar detector removed from his car parked just out side his building this afternoon.

Two caucasion youngish (mid 20’s) blokes parked in his driveway in their dark coloured Nissan Sylvia type sedan.  One got out and distracted the front office staff member by asking to use their toilet and although he was given directions to the local public toilet, it appeared to give his mate enough time to break the glass on the vehicle and remove the radar.

Please advise your staff to keep a wary eye out on all visitors to your site and ask them to ensure all valuables are removed from sight in their vehicles.

GETBA alert for Stolen Campervan

A member in Ra Ora Drive  just phoned me to report that one of their staff members had a credit card stolen from his bag.  The person who removed it  was driving a stolen Apollo campervan reg BLB543.

This van has been reported several times in similar circumstances over the past three days.

Please ask your staff to keep an eye out for it and I think if you see it parked anywhere it would be worth phoning the police.   Perhaps you could also let me know too.

If you have not already RSVP’d for breakfast next Wednesday and you would like to attend, please email me by return

Thanks

Keep an eye out for this vehicle and driver

"This morning around 11am a stocky man about 180cm, either Maori of Pacific Islander, came through the front door of our building and our admin person, and myself were upstairs and we could hear the door buzzer twice within the space of about 2 minutes. After the second the buzzer, we looked out of the window and I saw that guy driving off in a Silver colour Japanese car with the Reg. No. BRZ 574. He wore a three quarter long sleeve round collar T-shirt with red colour on both sleeves. He left as soon as my boss returned to the carpark"

Please keep an eye out for this vehicle and driver as he is "known" to the police.

Laptops snatched

Please instruct your staff to approach anyone noticed on site; either inside or out, they don't immediately recognise with a pleasant 'can I help you' approach. This may have prevented the need for the following email I recieved this afternoon. "Yesterday at 5.38pm we had a intruder drive into the rear carpark, walk into the office and in three minutes steal 3 laptops. Thick set stocky maori driving a green station wagon. We had staff working but he was that smooth no one picked up to the fact that he didn't work here." I am sure anyone who was bona fide would not mind at all being approached and anyone who wasn't would get a very clear message that they had been noticed as someone not meant to be here Previous email update: We were very quickly notified of someone who had paid the fellow offering the deal on mechanical repairs. They were able to furnish us with the rego and offer of a photograph of the person cashing their cheque. The vehicle attached to the rego is a White Mitsubishi Diamante. If another vehicle appears to also be used and or if anyone is able to catch his name when he calls, the police would be interested. Please let me know and I will ensure the details get to the right person. Thanks

GETBA Alert - Bogus Coke technician?

I was just sent this from a member

"At 2.30pm. today a Maori man came into our drive in a Coca Cola vehicle, came in and said he was a Coke technician and had come to service our Coke machine.  I told him we don’t have one, he asked was this No. 33 (which is clearly obvious where he came in) and I said yes.

I asked what company he wanted and he mumbled something like Brian B…… and I offered to look it up in the phone book.  He said Oh no I’ll just keep driving around.

I didn’t take the registration, stupidly, but rang Coke’s Customer technician service and they told me they had no servicing in Stonedon Drive and there only client here was across the road at .....

Just alert your other members please.   It may be nothing but it didn’t feel genuine."

If any one else has a visit from this person, and they are suspicious about his motive, please take his rego number and advise Coke.  Then if not genuine, please advise the police.

Thanks

Scrap Metal "Buyer"

I have just had a call from a member in Stonedon Drive who was approached by two characters in a small Isusu truck who were very keen to purchase his 'scrap metal' for cash.

Our member refused but they were very pushy and our member felt very uncomfortable.

He feels he had already been looking at what he had and will not be at all surprised to find this almost toothless mid european man in an  Isusu Elf  (rego BZU 960) with  his companion return after hours to see if it is still left out.

Could you please alert your guards to this vehicle  and if they see it about, could they keep an eye on it because our member instinctlively felt they were up to no good.

Thanks

GETBA - more suspicious characters

Two reports from yesterday of unwelcome visitors from members - the first one from the Andromeda Crescent area:

  • "at 4.40 this afternoon a young Caucasian guy in his late teens, early twenties walked into the office area and pretended he was applying for a job then said he was only joking, mentioned he was selling de-greaser which we never saw. This guy appeared to be very suspicious. When he noticed he was in full view of our camera he immediately switched off. A full description is as follows.

Caucasian late teen early twenty wearing blue jeans grey blue shirt with green embroided logo reading (THE GREEN STUFF).  He had a tattoo of what looked like an Asian symbol on the right lower arm. Slight build, youthful with medium brown hair."
The second one from a large manufacturer on Allens Road.

  •  "A night-time burglary occurred at our premises  when the offender(s) climbed into our yard, removed a pane of glass from an office window and reached into a drawer to remove keys to the building and vehicles.  The keys were used to open a door into the building which set off the burglar alarm. Only the keys were taken.

Please ensure all keys are locked away when left on premises

I have also had a couple of reports from the Sir William area of 2 guys sitting in a Honda for what seems abnormally long periods on more than one occasion recently and the concern is they are up to no good.  If they are there today, I will have a word with them.

Thanks for these reports, please keep this type of information coming in as it is really helpful to build a picture of what is happening in the area and it enables me to pass this info on to our security companies and the police where appropriate.

GETBA - security concerns

I have received several reports today:

1      Over the past couple of days another full container was stolen from premises in the Andromeda Crescent area. While containers being transported is not usually on the "suspicious behaviour list" and with their being a local inland port, this can be done at any time during the day or night legitimately. However, it might be worth while noting down the rego and company name of any lift-trucks seen lifting containers out of normal business hours and checking with the company they are being removed from. Alternatively you could send the details to me by email and I will hold them in case there is a problem.

2      "There was a suspicious car reported around Kerwyn Ave over the weekend. It is an older type of BMW either black or dark brown Rego  TU1649. It was seen on private property looking over the fence into our premises."

When I checked this with the police they advise that the rego does not belong to that vehicle and if anyone sees this vehicle around please report it straight to the police.

3      "We lost 3 water blasters and 1 tig welder and a series of axle stands and jacks. At least two vehicles were involved and this was well planned as they knew how and where to tamper with the alarm system.

If anyone has information or is offered gear please let us know at (09) 274 6809 or mobile 0274 572 531"

I note that tools seem to be targetted recently and I have been contacted by a company who is willing to demonstrate to anyone interested, how his product that produces instant security fog works.  If any one would like me to set up a demonstration locally, please let me know. This product will stop anyone who activates the sensor after breaking in being able to see anything to steal.

GETBA - keep an eye out for this person

I have just received this from a member in the Trugood Drive area, which might we worth sharing with your staff and asking them to keep an eye out for him and ensure he knows he has been noticed.

"This morning at about 10.00 am an individual with the following description tried to enter our premises. We were all standing about the centre of the building outside having morning tea as he was doing this. He then went to the next business but turned around when we noticed him. He looked confused once he was spotted.

Description as I remember:

· Maori or Islander

· About 5ft 8” tall

· Blue Beenie

· Commando Pants (Little Baggy)

· Unsure of the shoe ware but most probably rubber because we did not hear him.

· Slim build

· Unsure of the top he was wearing – Think it was dark colour.

He is obviously casing the area – We have our front door locked at all times so that is the only reason he could not enter the building. "

GETBA Security Update

Thanks to all for input over the white Falcon police were looking for.  It has now been found abandoned.

I have been advised from both the police and Matrix Security that our businesses were 'hammered' over the last week.

Certainly it is the highest week I remember (from a police statistics point of view) since I have been collating them for our area over the past 5 years.

Police advise that they are now looking for two SS commodoresOne red and the other black.  No regos at this point but they believe they are involved in the latest rash of burglaries.

It might be timely for you to remind your staff to ensure your premises are completely locked at the end of your business day and I would advise you to check that your alarm is in good working order and check your arrangements for monitoring and response with your security provider.  It is unfortunate the number of people who  only find out that either their alarm is faulty or the information given to their security provider is not up to date when they need them.

Collecting statistics is an integral part of my new role and I urge you to report to me any burglary experience you may endure, either attempted or actual whether it is reported to the police or not.

Inspector Searle has given me permission to have access to the name and address of any commercial burglaries in our area, reported to the police so I can follow up with the victim to find out the time, the type of goods either targeted or stolen, the type of entry etc.  I have also requested similar information from Security Managers in our group.

This data will be kept anonymous but will be used in a report where appropriate information will be offered to our local security providers and to you to help you be aware of vulnerabilities in both type of goods being targeted, and times and days of week burglaries have been committed on etc.

Please keep an eye out for any Red or Black SS Commodores in the are where you feel the driver may be up to no good and advise the police immediately.  Information on the regos on those vehicles could be very important.

GETBA Suspicious Vehicle alert - WHITE FALCON & BLACK HONDA

We have had a couple of vehicles reported where their occupants have been observed acting suspiciously.  One from a member in Greenmount Drive who noticed this vehicle with its two polynesian occupants driving around slowly looking at everything in great detail.  They were in a Black Honda  rego DSY 133.

The second was an alert from the police asking you to keep an eye out for a White Ford Falcon BA or BF newish model XR6 or similar currently acting suspiciously in our area - no rego at this stage.

White cars like this model are fairly uncommon - most of them are orange/black/silver/green etc. so please could you report  the rego of any vehicles seen in the area with this description to the police ASAP.   if you do see anything to report please also notify me as I can also ensure it gets to intel.

“Scrap” Metal sought after by thieves

With the market in China currently paying very high prices for metal, the police advise there is a surge in ‘scrap’ metal thefts.  I understand that this metal is often cut down and altered to look like scrap by the time it reaches the scrap metal dealers.   Please ensure all metal that could be of interest to these thieves is secured.  We have recently had reports of very high value metal thefts from our members.

The police also advise that the number of light vans and 4WD being stolen recently has risen significantly.  Please advise your staff to be more alert around their vehicles and to rely on their instinct.  If something does not look or feel right about behaviour, then please note it down and I am happy to receive any information of that nature that can be passed on to the police or to warn other members.  Please also ensure they check the identity of their courier drivers as many temporary courier vans are now used to collect goods.

With the current average of 10 burglaries per week in our business district equating to approximately 500 per year, and their being approximately 1500 businesses in our area, the likelihood of any of them being hit over the year has a significant 1 in 3 chance.

Our objective is to drive the criminals away, by making this area unattractive to them.    We need to all work together to ensure this happens!

Handbag snatchers

We have just received an email from a GETBA member whose staff member had a nasty experience last night when shopping in broad daylight.   As soon as you get into your car, lock all doors before you put your handbag down.

“One of our ladies had the unfortunate experience of a man attempting to get her door open. But she had locked her door and was safe although very shaken!  She also managed to get the car rego which she has passed on to the police.”

A member in Stonedon Drive noticed the following car acting suspiciously in their car park early this morning.

Red Toyota Celica which had no number plate on the front of the vehicle, and, YJ 3427 on the rear.

After the arrival of another employee and the attention it received, the car drove off.

Copper Update - more suspicious characters about

Following on from the spate of metal taps and copper piping being stolen over the weekend, I have been advised by two members that kids on bikes have been noticed on their CCTV footage riding close to what they require, then delivering a swift kick to dislodge it and quickly scoop it up and put it in their pockets and they are away. If you see kids on bikes hanging around, then please move them on their way. If they feel they are being watched, they will be less likely to cause any damage.

I have just been advised that a rather scruffily dressed, portly maori, with a long grey streaked ponytail, wearing a black singlet, black shorts with a white stripe, carrying a manbag across his chest, driving a Bronze Mitsy Hatchback MJ 7224, unnerved a GETBA member in the Cryers Road area early this afternoon. The rather tatty looking car had rear sun visors, a rusty roof rack and headed towards the Stonedon Drive area.

I have also just been advised by another GETBA member that a Dark Green Sedan, Rego AZH 613 is driving around the area with three fellows in it and they appear to be more interested than perhaps warranted in various businesses. I have asked Police Intel to check these vehicles, but please let me or the police know if you see anyone acting suspiciously.

GETBA Security Update - Copper Products

I have been advised from several members in the Springs Road & Ormiston Road areas that copper pipes & taps were damaged and removed over the weekend by thieves.  Unfortunately no one noticed the significant water losses that occurred as a consequence.  Wall damage resulted from unsuccessful attempts to remove taps. As it turns out the amount of copper stolen was negligible, but the damage and expense it caused certainly was not.

Camera footage shows a white flat deck truck or ute and a van with a stripe down the side, so please report any registrations noted of any vehicles similar to this, seen acting suspiciously.

Coincidentally I called into a local business that makes copper products today and they had an attempted break in over the weekend.  Fortunately they did not get in.

Please use this as a reminder to ensure all scrap metal is secured, and your business is well secured at the end of the business day.  It’s easy to leave windows open in this weather.

Stolen Car

Please can you all keep an eye out for a silver grey NISSAN SKYLINE R 32, Rego YR 3850 with fading paint on boot and a dent on right front guard, with touch green paint.  It was recently stolen from the Botany area. Camera footage shows two Polynesian males of solid build drive in together in a reasonably modern looking black van, one then jumped out and wired the car up before driving off in it.  Another car was stolen later that day close by.  If you see the stolen vehicle or note a black van acting suspiciously, please note down all possible details and advise the police (and me if possible) ASAP.

Community Constables

It's that time of the year again when windows tend to be left open after hours and the police advise that this time of the year during school holidays and public holidays is often seen as an easy target by criminals, therefore it might be useful to check that all windows are left closed each night.

Statistics from the Police indicate that crime in our area for January is around the same level as December which was lower than the previous few months.   They have also supplied us with a list of the 7 Community Constables available in the Eastern area.

Constable Paul DEVANE                 Pakuranga               Based at Pakuranga Town Centre
Constable Anthony FIELDING          Highland Park           Based at Pakuranga Town Centre
Constable Phil SAVILL                    Howick                    Based at Howick Station
Constable Ian PENGELLY                Meadowlands           Based at Botany Town Centre
Constable Craig GIBSON                Botany                    Based at Botany Town Centre
Constable Mark HANSON                Otara                     Based at Otara Station
Constable Seluone SELUONE           Flatbush                  Based at Otara Station

The Community  Constables can assist with many issues including providing Crime Prevention advice, neighbourhood disputes etc. They are always happy to receive information on criminal offending in their communities and can also be used to advise Police of offences such as burglaries, thefts and vehicle crime.

The Community Constable is not always at their office so we strongly recommend that you ring first to make an appointment if you wish to see the Community Constable.

GETBA Alert for Bright Yellow Civic

Have just recieved a request from a Security Manager of one of our larger local businesses as follows: "Please could you ask members to look out for a bright yellow late eighties/early nineties Honda Civic, reg no CJL 873 ( stolen plates) which was used to steal milk from premises in Allens Road early this morning. I believe it is the same car used in the same circumstances on 6 December which was then white and bore the registration NX 2269."

Carpark theft - details caught on camera

A member reports a theft from one of their staff cars in their carpark in Accent Drive yesterday and gives positive feedback about their experience with the police.

"After checking our video tapes we saw a 84 Ford Laser coloured silver, reg LY6544 come into the carpark at 2.54pm and park in an empty space and go straight to the car adjacent to them.  The occupants were two Maori/Polynesian males, medium build, both wearing baseball caps and one in shorts and one in jeans.   After unsuccessfully trying to break into one car, they tried the next one and stole an Alpine car stereo.  They were in and out in 4 minutes.

I have phoned the 0508 catche number and they are sending their burglary unit out today - which is really great as you tend to think this sort of crime doesn't rate high enough for attention."

Another member tells us that ..." in the early morning hours last week we got broken into and our digital camera stolen off the desk.  The gate was shut and blind down so they had to know it was there previous to breaking in as we are well off the road.  They also knew we had  a surveillance camera operating as they climbed over the side fence in order for the camera to miss them.  They also only broke the window enough to reach in and grab it so the alarm would not go off."

Keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour

I have been receiving reports from a few members indicating that opportunist thieving is quite prevalent at present,  in one case a partly locked container was tampered with  in Andromeda Crescent, and goods were removed in broad daylight in working hours.

Another member located in Kerwyn Ave "just had a suspicious character come in and ask for directions to a non existent company located at 25 Kerwyn Ave.

Details are: Dark Blue Toyota Tercel Rego # DCJ780 (4 door sedan) A woman was sitting in the car in our car park.(in her 20's maybe).  The guy was olive skinned (not sure whether Maori or Polynesian) - young - early to mid 20's can't  remember what he was wearing but was having a good look around in reception while talking to our receptionist. Had a light coloured jumper / pullover on. I believe they were looking for opportunities."

A member in Ormiston Road was burgled one night last week around 9.30pm.  "The lights were on, two cars outside the building, all doors locked.  There were two of our guys working upstairs and the burglars jimmied the door open downstairs and were in, stole a laptop and two cameras in the time it took one of our guys to come downstairs to see what the noise was.  We are in Ormiston Road near where the Shell service station is being built.

We called the police, and they took the paper the details were written on, but from memory it was a dark coloured Telstra Sedan with a rego number of TY6575 or TY6572, and there were two Polynesian men."

Another member in Josephs Way had a company car broken into and a wallet stolen recently.  "The car was parked in sight of our office, at 8am, also insight of two other offices.  We were called by BNZ at just after 9 to tell us someone suspicious was using a gold card at Rebel Sport.    We discovered the front drivers window had been smashed. By this time they had also tried an ATM in Panmure and to buy petrol at Mobil Panmure.

Obviously well organised and nothing we can do but it shows once again you shouldn't leave valuables on display in a vehicle"

Another member had their door locks glued last week.  Has anyone else had this experience recently?

We are keen to set up as many business neighbourhood Support groups as possible to ensure that as many people as possible are all working together to keep an eye out for any suspicious behaviour and ensure it is reported.  If you are keen to be involved, perhaps as the Coordinator of your neighbourhood, please let me know and I will work with you to get this established as soon as possible.

Yellow Utility noted as possible vehicle to look out for

On Saturday at approx 3.00pm we had a fairly big guy (Polynesian or Maori) dressed in shorts and jandles came through our factory from a side door and into the office. My Daughter was in the office and she confronted him. He said he was looking for a job. My daughter told him to go and see someone in the factory. I was running machinery at the back of the factory at the time. He never came to see me. My daughter never thought much of it until I had noticed the side door of the factory was left opened. After a quick look around we had noticed some goods were missing from the stores. My daughter described the vehicle that the guy was driving, as a vehicle with no back on it.

At about 11.00am today I noticed a yellow Holden 1 ton Utility (HQ or HZ) or flat deck Ute drive into our driveway.

By the time I had gone outside, he had turned around and drove out and therefore I never got the rego. It seemed very suspicious.

Keep an eye out for this Silver Subaru

I have just received this from  Adam Munday  - Chubb's Contractor for East Auckland:

"Just a quick note regarding a very suspicious vehicle hanging around Newark Place in East Tamaki on Saturday 28th.I have only now got the rego which is DAU 274.(Silver Subaru ).

4x island or Maori youths were acting suspiciously for around 1 hour in this vicinity as thought they were watching the comings and goings of businesses.

(A large manufacturer in the proximity) were hit several times about 4 weeks ago and these characters may be lining up for some more??"

REMINDER - that the GETBA AGM Breakfast is on the 15th November, details next week of Guest Speaker etc.

Alert from the Neales Road area

A message from a member in Trugood Drive asking me to advise members  to be on the alert for a vehicle caught on camera by them stealing scrap steel from their bin last Saturday morning 28th Oct @10am.

"This is not the first time.  1989 Mitsubishi Delica light 2.5 tonne ute.   Rego RY 2061.  2 occupants maori /polynesian  mid thirties both wearing orange safety vests."

I understand this vehicle is known to the police, therefore would advise you to contact them if seen in the area.

I have also been notified that the earlier vehicle you were advised about this morning has been seen also in the Lady Ruby Drive area, driving up and down.

Another message from a member in the Neales Rd area later this morning:

"A Middle Eastern/Indian gentleman 5 ft nothing with black turban and beard entered our offices on the pretext of looking for a job. I was the only one here and he could not see me. I asked him to leave but 3 minutes later one of our staff found him lurking in the foyer…apparently reading our building WOF notices???. Together we ushered him out. He went so quickly that he walked straight into the closed glass doors and bounced back like a bird hitting a window, poor chap.

He was driving a red 2 door CLJ 630.

With the crime rate as it is, I would like to remind all members to report any suspicious behaviour ASAP.  Don't forget the 0508 CATCHE number to call with information for the police that has happened.  If found on site please call 111.

Suspicious Vehicle

I had a call Wednesday from a member in the Cryers Road Area informing me about a "Browny - Grey Holden Rodeo Space Cab type Ute cruising around their yard."  without good reason to be there and would like members to keep an eye out.  If a rego is noted by anyone seeing this vehicle acting in a similar manner, please advise me.

Message from Sgt Mike Stopforth
"As you are all aware burglaries in the Greenmount East Tamaki Industrial area have increased in the past few months.  Many of the offences that are occurring are opportunist type burglaries.  The offenders are targeting cash and small items that are easy disposed of.  About three months ago we had some success with apprehending a major receiver of lap top computers for the Auckland area.  This has had the effect of decreasing the numbers of car thefts but the number of burglaries increased slightly.  Burglaries in the area are a focus for local Police and we are always keen to hear ideas or information that may assist in reducing the number of offences.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind members of the importance of locking away valuables.  Lap top computers and honesty boxes should not be left in view.  Sometimes the offenders cause huge amounts of damage getting into a building for very little reward.  It is also a good time to remind members to be vigilant in locking up premises at the end of the day especially with summer coming up and more windows being opened during the day for ventilation.  Opportunist burglars look for the easy target and if your premises are locked up tight they will move on to the next less secure site"

Suggestion from Inspector Jim Searle
Could you please send a brief email about your experience of burglary or theft and what was learned by this.  Snippets including what happened and why could be relayed in our newsletters including advice offered by you.  Interest and impact is likely to be greater when it comes from personal experience. Sharing your experience could benefit others.  The snippets sent out would be anonymous.

Icon Security Recommends:

We remind businesses that unfortunately all too often, thefts of property may be by their own staff.  He advises that all businesses should have a policy of all new staff (including temps) be appropriately vetted prior to employment.  Recommended checks include criminal history, financial history & work references.  The cost of out sourcing this service is relatively low (approx $75) and can save businesses thousands of dollars and time and stress, in catching and dismissing an internal thief.

Commercial burglaries & thefts still on the rise in our area

Burglaries in the GETBA area continue to rise and indications are that September will have a higher number of burglaries than August.  August was our high for this year and second highest in the almost 5 years we have been collecting statistics for this area.

Sgt Stopforth has asked me to advise you that cash is the most sought after item right now and the Police recommend you clearly display signs on your premises, where appropriate, to say that no cash is held on your premises.

From a GETBA member in Harris Road last night...

"I've just had my laptop stolen from my office... our receptionist was away from her desk, I went out to a brief lunch (about 20mins) and my laptop has gone.

A young guy walked in as I walked out at lunchtime... medium build, dark wavy hair, shorts & tee, nodded hello at me & looked like he knew who he wanted to see, confidently walking past me. Someone saw him leave the building with some sort of package & asked others if he was a client.

Please warn people... my office is not in direct line of sight from the entrance, someone took time to look for whatever they wanted, and stopped to pack up the laptop into it's bag before leaving. Cheeky."

A timely reminder to ensure procedures are in place that if the receptionist is away from her desk, either an audible alert is on, someone covers for her, or the door is locked.

Matrix Recommends:

When unlocking your yard each day, remind your staff to lock the padlock to ensure that a similar one is not replaced during the day which a thief may then come back later and unlock it with his key.  If he has a key he is less likely to be challenged.

When using cleaners on site out of normal business hours, ask them to ensure they correctly identify any staff member that comes into the building.  Matrix advises us that criminals will often try to pass themselves off as staff members by sitting down at a desk pretending to work, then once the cleaner has left the building, they may  help themselves.

These are simple things to do, but easy to get caught out if unaware.

We invite you to submit any tips or suggestions to Coralee for our website to assist businesses to be less vulnerable to crime.

Chainsaws stolen and Maroon Japanese Car Rego

From a member close to Te Irirangi Drive

"We have had an opportunist take 3 chainsaws from from our dispatch area sometime on either Friday evening or Monday morning.

  • 1 x Echo CS3000 14" saw serial # 36028543.
  • 1 x Husqvarna 136 14" saw serial number 20443600450
  • 1 x Talon AC310318 14" chainsaw serial number to be advised.

These burglars are cheeky and must have walked near us working, unobserved & ducked the surveillance cameras. Every other chainsaw in the whole place has a stainless steel wire strop locked through it."

I was sent a Rego BJZ591 for the laptop that was stolen.  Apparently a staff member noted a "Maroon Japanese car in reasonable nick " there at the same time the laptop was stolen.

Scrap Metal Alert, Vehicles noted acting suspiciously

Scrap metal appears to be continually targeted by thieves and we have been told of several recent instances of where station wagons, 4WDs, light trucks etc are driven in and the occupants just help themselves, sometimes during working hours with little regard for being caught.

Much of this metal is very valuable.  Please don't hesitate to note down descriptions and regos of anyone seen loading goods that you might feel are unauthorised.  Either use the GETBA Fax form on our website or call  0508 228 243 to report the activity.

From a member in the Kerwyn Avenue area

"Yesterday at 3.47 pm, a silver or pearl white Pajero with flared guards, sunroof, racks and a graphic stripe pulled into our company, and within 20 seconds had smashed the passenger side window and helped themselves to my navman GPS.  Our Manager recalls seeing two darker shaded people sitting in this vehicle outside our premisies earlier."

This is an example of where noting down the numberplate when the vehicle was seen parked earlier may have led the police closer to finding the culprits.
An idea that was suggested at our recent seminar was that all businesses keep a log at reception (possibly in the OSH register ) where any staff members are urged to note down suspicious vehicle details.  This info can be passed to us and / or the police if required at any time.

Phonecall from a member this morning who had a visit from two vehicles obviously looking for opportunities, but he approached them and they disappeared pretty quickly.  The description of the vehicles were Small white Mazda type Ute AYD 473?? (this is more than likely not the correct rego and may be the vehicle noted recently with another rego, mentioned further down this page) and a medium sized dark charcoal station wagon (possibly old Mitsi type) with rego beginning RT ????..

An email from Chubb Security client this morning noting a vehicle out of our area seen acting suspiciously

"This morning we had a visit from 3 interesting looking gentlemen. They were driving a black car reg CZF 674. I think it was a Mitsubishi.      ...........we are getting hit at Manurewa every second night.   I would imagine they would be doing the rounds at night in the near future.

Another message from the owner of the vehicle who had his GPS stolen yesterday

"Please be informed yet another intruder on our premises.   I went out to investigate, told him to leave his car on the roadway. Asked who he had come to see, he replied "Dont worry who I have come to see".   He then drove around to Andromeda Crescent and disappeared.
The description of the car ' Subaru Impreza 5 door, Reg CML879, driven by a Pacific Islander with woolly hair."

Police 0508 number now available for reporting suspicious behaviour

"The number of burglaries in our GETBA area has recently tripled.   Therefore in recognising the seriousness of this, the Police are spending time and resources to resolve this problem right now.

They wish to build partnerships with key people, such as Local Security Management, Key Business Owners etc and are currently gathering information to assist them in establishing an up to date clear picture of the area.

They would like a list of all shift working businesses in the area.  They would like to know the hours the shifts begin and finish, days of operation, including weekends and public holidays, approximate number of staff involved.

There has been a reasonable amount of frustration around information being sent to the police when suspicious behaviour has been experienced.  The Police have set up a CRIME LINE to address this.  Please put into your cell phone the following number and use it to report any suspicious activity noted, wherever you are

          0508 Catche   0508 228 243

Do not use this number in place of 111.  If police attendance is required to apprehend an offender present or just leaving the scene, you must dial 111.

Please help the police in their approach to reduce crime in this area with as much information as possible.  We also have available on our website a Suspicious Behaviour Fax Form that can be printed and used to remind you of the information the Police would find most useful."

A request from a member..keep an eye out for any deals
"..... our offices were broken into last night in Springs Road. They have taken a printer and have removed various stereos and dvd screens from our limousines.   We have notified the police but thought that your members would be interested and keep an eye out for any 'deals' going and perhaps increasing their security."

Please keep the information emailed to me, it will be sent on appropriately.

Another two members reported this afternoon:

From Ti Rakau Drive: Two guys a few weeks ago stole some pipe offcuts and returned today to take a skeleton from pattern of stainless steel. One guy Polynesian, other had baseball cap Driving off white small Mazda type ute Rego MH 8104

From Basalt Place - broken into on Sun Night and various things were taken including laptops etc – To get in/out they cut through our fence possibly to assist their getaway. Two weeks prior 14/08/06 the following car was seen 12pm to 12:40pm in our carpark – with 2 Maori or Pacific Islanders possibly casing the place out – all details have been passed on to Police and the owner of their building.  Rego:  YT5207   BLACK CHARADE CAR

Request From Police for more info please

Resulting from my previous email to GETBA members about suspicious activities yesterday,  I have received a further description of the activities from the Silver Car Reg DEK 116 and a request from Howick Police Intel to alert you all to the fact that these characters are known to the Police here and on the North Shore.  The police say "They will do a rec job on the premises before they burgle it".

From a GETBA Member......"Just to let you know that that silver car reg DEK116 was at our premises also yesterday. Our warehouse staff jotted down their details as thought they looked suspicious. One of the 3 males got out of his car to look around & was surprised by one of our staff (who was up high on a shelf so wasn't visible from outside) asking if she could help: he replied "Do you sell" .He was about mid 20s Maori round face & curly black hair There were 3 Maori males altogether, one only looked about 17 in the back of the car with a hoodie. We are in Springs road near the Caltex station."

These guys are obviously pretty active and just looking for something to steal, so please ask your staff to keep an eye out for them in particular and to immediately report any sightings to the police.

And of course, if you would like to know more about joining GETBA and becoming part of GETBA Business Neighbourhood Support, please contact me and I will arrange to visit you at a convenient time.

Recently reported vehicle Descriptions & Occupants

A member has just reported that 3 Guys were found trying to steal things from his business in Averton Place.  They were driving a Silver car Rego DEK 116 and their concern was that they would go on to other local businesses looking for other things to steal.

Another member in the Orchard Business Park - off Smales Road noticed last Saturday morning a Light Sky Blue Toyota? People Mover, Rego BHK313, parked at the chain across the Derg Place entrance, a Maori chap got out, spent sometime looking at the units directly in front of him - which would have been Number 11 and Number 12, then took several photo's of the units on his cell phone. His actions appeared suspicious to the member who reported them.  They arranged extra security over the weekend as they were quite concerned. They are keen to hear from any other business seeing these guys in action.  I will pass any info sent to me along to them.

We are receiving excellent reports on a daily basis from the Matrix Street Patrols on suspicious activity found during their patrols in our area.  I will regularly put pertinent info from these reports on our website, so please get in the habit of regularly checking the Security Alerts page.

GETBA Dk Blue BMW Vehicle Alert

I have just recieved this from a member who works in the central Ti Rakau Drive area and has his car parked in a very open carpark:

"Yesterday when I was about to leave work I (looked out the window and) saw a car parked behind my car in the car parks.  The car had 4 Polynesian/Maori people in it.  They drove down the end of the car park, then turned around and faced the exit parked across the car parks. When I came outside they slowly started driving towards my car.  I turned around and came back inside because I believe that they were going to attempt to stand me over for my car, hence the reason there was 4 of them!  When they saw me turn around they took off so I followed them to get their number plate. When they saw me they all ripped the fingers and yelled abuse.

The car is:   1989 318i BMW, Navy/Royal Blue, Lowered on chrome wheels, Tinted windows, Rego CMY 40"

He is sure they wont trouble him again, but the concern is that this is happening in our area.  Please ask your staff to advise the police and or us of any unusual activity they notice.

Crime Spree in East Tamaki
With the success of intensive police operations carried out in our area over recent weeks, a huge decline in vehicle theft and laptops has resulted.  HOWEVER the burglary rate has risen in our industrial area because the target has changed.

Overseas Laptop markets have now been shut down and CASH & VALUABLES are being targeted by thieves.  This has resulted in many buildings being broken into and little other than available cash has been stolen.  With quite small returns on the criminal's time and effort, this results in more burglaries being carried out for them to retain the same income.
The police also report it is expected they will take a longer time in the buildings they break into therefore are more exposed to being caught!

Please remind your staff of the importance of keeping cash & goods from view at all times during and after work hours.

White Mitsubishi noted as one to look out for

A GETBA member in the BishopsGate area noticed suspicious activity around the occupants of the following vehicle yesterday afternoon:

White Mitsubishi Diamante/Magna sedan, Rego WP1358

"It was parked at the back of our building, partially concealed. The vehicle contained 3 Poly/Maori teenagers, 1 male got out and went for a walk along the back of the buildings, while I couldn't see where he went to, he got back into the car after a very short time.

He was a Male Polynesian/Maori  5'8 with fuzzy black hair, wearing a baseball cap, blue jeans, white sweatshirt.   I came out the back door noticed him standing by the car, when I said 'Gidday' he just spat on the ground, turned around and got in the front passengers side of the car. They sat in the vehicle for a couple of minutes then drove out our driveway into the Cul D Sac (Bishop Brown). The car stopped and a Maori/Poly teen a girl swapped places with the male front passenger - the trio appeared to be drinking cans of 'Woodstock' Bourbon/cola- drove out of the street quickly - I had the distinct impression they were casing vehicles and buildings"

If you see this vehicle and its occupants sitting around don't hesitate to call the police and let them know that it has already been noted as acting suspiciously in our area.

2 alerts from GETBA members today

GETBA Member Topcoat Specialist Coatings have asked me to email GETBA members with the following:

"..........arrived at the office this morning, 33 Stonedon Drive, we have had thieves cut through a back fence, accessing via next door driveway and gate, Ace Doors.  We have had a Red Nissan Nivara Ute with canopy stolen, reg. AZM617, sign written Topcoat Specialist Coatings in yellow.

Would you kindly ask your other members to be on the look out for this vehicle and to report any sightings to either us (274 9491) or the Otara Police (272 0900).

and....

I was just asked by a member in Sir William Avenue to ask you to alert your staff to a man seen acting suspiciously very recently in the Sir William Avenue area.

Riding a very scruffy bike he was approximately 5"6 - 5'8",  with black cropped hair, little goatee beard, polynesian/maori wearing black trousers, black half jacket, only 1 shoe on right foot and grey sock on left foot.

Our member reported this man riding down all the local driveways looking intently into buildings on the way.  The member felt that he was up to no good as when he noticed our member looking intently at him, he gave the usual fingered salute!

Unusual interest noted by Member

I have recently received two reports from members which I feel are worth sharing:

From the Burswood Torrens Road area:

A late model Toyota Van, rego CBE424, with an European driver and a Polynesian passenger seemed to be taking an unusual amount  of time when driving past our warehouse and appeared to be very interested in our store.

From the Bishopsgate Area:

Concern was expressed by a GETBA member when he read yesterday's email about the driver of the White double cab Courier noted in the Ormiston area.

"This fits the exact turn of events that occurred when (a local shop) had the ram raid, ie a person staking out Bishopsgate in a stolen car then a Ute stolen the next day followed by a ram raid in the early hours of the morning"

When reporting vehicle's descriptions please try to get at least the rego, colour, condition (new, untidy etc) make and model, if possible.  Don't forget to check out the 'Security News' on our website if you see anything suspicious.  It contains all the reports sent out with vehicle details and regos highlighted for quick checking to see if this vehicle has been already noted acting suspiciously.  If so, don't hesitate to call the police.

Suspicious Behaviour

A GETBA member in Bishopsgate has reported the following:

Around 8AM this morning (3rd July) two rough looking Maori or Polynesian men in new high-vis jackets, aged 35-40, were observed in a late model immaculate dark silver Toyota Camry in the carpark. The vehicle number plate was SQ 7546. After an hour they were approached and asked if they were waiting for someone. Yes they were waiting for someone in a nearby unit - soon after they went into that unit and asked for "Sane" who of course did not work there.  Ten minutes later they drove off. It would seem probable that they were "casing" a building in the area.

I went next door and they told me I had sent him in for plastic and that he had looked around their showroom - I had not even talked to this chap.

Car was small black, rego AYE 955, guy was Maori about 6 foot tall, black cropped hair and unshaven. Clothing dark top, jeans and sneakers."

Have noticed for the third or fourth time now a car with 2 maori or polynesian guys inside parking outside johns (next door) Roller door.  They appear to just be sitting in the car and are usually there for around 15 minutes or so it is now 12.15 and they have arrived.  Last noticed them on the 18 May when John called me to make me aware of them.  The car is a champagne colour Nissan 25Excimo Reg CTQ192.

White Van driver reported acting suspiciously

"We just had some suspicious activity this morning at our premises in the Accent Drive area.  A man got out of a white van, reg DZ7208, and walked up to our courtyard wall and had a close look at the wall.

Unfortunately the staff member who saw him thought we might have been having some work done, so didn't pay much attention, therefore can't give you a description of him.  He disappeared from view, then was seen going back to his vehicle and driving off.  Fortunately he did get the reg."

Vehicles to note

I have recieved an email from a member in Trugood Drive, just now, to ask me to advise members of the following description of two vehicles whose occupants were noted acting suspiciously.  I have also been advised of a significant amount of cash been stolen over the weekend and another 2 vehicles seen acting suspiciously late last week.

"We have just in the last 10 minutes had two cars drive through our premises with no reason for being on site.
Their non-responsive attitude to how we can help them or why they were here is the reason we feel this is suspicious and worth forwarding details on.

Reg # CBW308 Dark Red Holden Station Wagon, with two Rottweiler type dogs in the back followed by a  Reg # CFT 598 later model Silver BMW"

"There is a Red Toyota Levin AAY330 cruising our area (Ormiston road) at present.  They have been up and down our road several times, and according to our staff, seem to be acting suspiciously. There are two men in the vehicle, maybe mid 20’s, possibly maori"

"Just to let you know we had a theft on Saturday evening around 6.00pm roughly $3000.00 dollars taken.  We had 4 working in the building at the time and it happened within ten minutes of the cash up being complete and my husband dealt with another issue.  The cash up area is well away from the main entrance. There was a
white Mitsubishi in the area at the time.  Our premises are in Birmingham Road East Tamaki."

I have notified the police of these details, however I urge you to pass this info to your staff to ask them to be sure to challenge anyone seen acting suspiciously with a very polite "Can I help you?"  It will let let them know that they have been noted, so unlikely to think they can continue.

Vehicle Change for 'known' suspicious character

It appears that the characters who are 'looking for (various names given)" in our area, mainly noted in the Greenmount / Cryers Rd area, have changed their vehicle yet again.

The vehicle noted yesterday and verified by a member as the same bloke in the silver legacy, has previously visited looking for "Thomas", is now driving a Blue Legacy with rego CYR 49.

Our member let him know that the police are looking for him and businesses all over the Greenmount East Tamaki area are on the look out for him.  He exited rather quickly denying that it could possibly be him.  The police have sent a picture to our member to identify him and it appears to be verified.

Please advise your staff to keep an eye out for this vehicle and it's occupants and advise the police if seen acting suspicously.  It is advisable to dial 111 if the suspicious behaviour noted happening, but call 295 0200 if after the fact.

Known Local Gangs

Police Crime Analysist Karl McCabe followed on from his previous intelligence briefing for the businesses in the GETBA area by stating that there appears to be a hierarchy amongst gangs and this appears to be the way they are organized:

    • Tribesmen – “Senior”
    • Killer Bees – Tribesmen in waiting!
    • MRC - Killer Bees in training!
    • PDB - Also known to associate with the Killer Bees !

Tribesmen
Consist of approximately 29 members, with 10 associates going through the initiation process, main focus - organised drug dealing. They are also ‘known’ up north where many of them have families.

Killer Beez  KBZ
A feeder gang into the Tribesmen and currently has a fairly high morale as they perceive themselves as pretty much able to operate freely without police interference.     They are identified by their distinctive clothing – mainly black with gold coloured lettering on it.  (Photos of types of clothing available from Coralee)
They often appear reasonably well presented with tattoos on the inside of their arms, often ‘KillerBeez’ in large lettering.  Most of them are unemployed and use stand over tactics for vehicle crime.  They will often sell the vehicles quite cheaply for scrap. Laptops are popular as they have access to receivers who will pay up to $1,000 for a good laptop.  Recently there have been a couple of incidents where pistols have been drawn.  They are know to operate Tinny houses.

M R C & PDB
Feeder gangs into the Killer Beez – typically 11-13 age group and also use stand over tactics in service stations, helping themselves to cigarettes, chocolates etc, often recognized by their approach in what they steal.

What can our members do?

 ·        Trespass anyone who is hanging about (details below)

·         Take photos of anyone who acts suspicious, noting date
and time (particularly useful when trespassing them.

·         Give police clear Video footage

·         Notify them of sightings

·         Note details of vehicles used by them

·         Notify police if you see them hanging about.

 Info helpful to the police

Knowledge of :

    • where their tattooing is typically done
    • where printing / embroidery of their clothing is done
    • names of their girlfriends / associates etc

The police would be grateful for any information you feel might be useful in them identifying any of these gang members or their associates.  They have a comprehensive dossier on known gang members and it is possible to arrange to view these photos for identification purposes.

Please forward anything of use to Karl.McCabe@police.govt.nz. (Officer in Charge of Howick Intelligence)

Trespassing Procedure

In the event of undesirables being caught on your premises you may issue them with a trespass notice.  This notice informs them that it is an offence punishable by a fine not exceeding $1,000, or imprisonment not exceeding 3 months, if they return within 2 years.

I have a copy of the appropriate form, which may be copied on to your own letterhead.  If you would like me to email you a copy then please request it by return. (Unfortunately not possible to attach it to this email)

A trespass can be a verbal warning but harder to formalise and implement.

3 copies are required and a photo attached would be ideal. One copy is given to the offender,  one copy to the delivered to the local Police station ( it will be entered  into their computer and stored at Papakura Police Station (only 24 hour station in Counties Manukau) and the other kept for your records.

Each warning continues for a 2 year period but if at any time they are invited back on to the property the trespass notice is no longer valid and a new one would need to be issued

Proactive Move by Police

A very proactive move by the Eastern Intelligence Dept of Counties Manukau Police, has resulted in a series of meetings held at the Howick Police station, with our Security Managers, Botany Crime watch Patrols, media etc.

These meetings will be occurring 3 weekly. The first one begun last week.

Topics discussed by Karl McCabe, Senior Intell Analyst include: What is Intell? interpreting the criminal environment, recent local crime trends, and future likely trends; discussing likely impacts on our area, & reducing the reward for the crime.

Useful information included:

  • That over the past 5 years there has been an average increase of 2% in crime in the eastern area, however statistics kept by GETBA from the police over the past 4 years show that our commercial burglaries have reduced from 360 per year down approximately 30% to 253 for the previous 12 months up to end December 2005.
  • Criminals appear to be more brazen, often wearing Fluorescent jackets
  • Commercial burglaries occurred mainly on Saturday nights and early Sunday mornings
  • Pakuranga home burglaries are more likely to occur during working hours and Flat Bush burglaries have been occurring during the afternoons
  • School burglaries are on the increase with main targets being Laptops
  •  Automotive parts &  copper spouting have been a recent targets
  • Laptops are targeted by “walk ins”  (opportunists)
  • Ti Rakau, Greenmount, Lady Ruby and Kerwyn Avenue appear to be the most commonly hit streets in our area.
  • Thieves breaking into vehicles are using “Dot Punches” which are comparatively quiet
  • Vehicles which are either sign written or have a suit jacket or similar, indicate to criminals that there is likely a cell phone, wallet, laptop etc in that vehicle to pinch.
  • Many parent companies (ex NZ) do not perceive there is a problem compared to local trends in Head Office area (eg some large overseas commercial estates) and therefore not always keen to upgrade appropriately to help lessen the vulnerability.
  • There are two or three main “youth” gangs operating where the members are inclined to be older than youths.  Names are Killer Bees (KBZ) , MFC (Translation Unprintable) and the Penion Drive Boys (PDB),  If you see them with caps, sweats etc showing these initials watch them carefully, move them along where possible and don’t hesitate to report their behaviour to the police.  They can be trespassed.  We will learn more about these gangs in future meetings.

Statistics include:

  • 41% of burglaries committed were on buildings with deadlocks
  • 27% had alarms (not known whether they were switched on at time of burglary)
  • 4.3% of these burglaries occurred while security guards were patrolling
  • 5.7% occurred in well lit areas
  • Recent home burglary stats show that the most common target is jewellery (37.3%)  Laptops/ computer equip/ cameras (24%)  Cash 20%
  • This eastern area is recognised as fruitful for criminals as there is likely to be reasonable value in property
  • 65% of all vehicles stolen had their ignition barrel pulled or column lock damaged and 44% had alarms fitted
  • Only 3% had steering/clutch/brake locking devices fitted
  •  Drive offs are occurring more frequently at service stations
  • Some vehicles stolen are being used for scrap metal

Recommendations include:

  • Managers to encourage their staff to visibly write down or report by phone the details of anyone seen acting suspiciously, and send any photos and rego details to me to forward to the police.
  • When looking for a car park in large parking areas, check for broken glass on ground, chances are that this area is particularly vulnerable to vehicle break ins

More in depth knowledge of these and related areas will be shared by the police in these meetings and I will pass on whatever is relevant to our members.
